Vision and Values

Vision

We envision a future where public lands are experienced as shared spaces of belonging; places where all people feel at home and take part in their care, protection, and preservation.

Values

  • Persistence + Partnership: We bring purpose and determination to our work which is made more impactful through the power of collective action.
  • Care + Service: We take responsibility for the land we love by showing up, pitching in, and tending to both people and place.
  • Joy + Fun: In every shared adventure, we aim to create space for people of all ages and abilities to explore and feel free in nature.

2025 Strategic Plan

Friends of the Blue Hills (FBH) created its strategic plan in a way that included many voices and used real data to guide decisions. The process started by bringing together a diverse group of people, setting clear goals, and making a shared plan for the work.

FBH also gathered input from community members, including people who don’t always have a chance to be heard. Then, the Board and staff worked together to update the organization’s mission, vision, and values. They also looked at what the organization does well and where it can improve.

Finally, the group agreed on clear goals and decided how to measure progress. This helps make sure FBH stays on track and continues moving forward.

Please read our 2025 Strategic Plan.

Principles of Diversity

FBH strives to consciously create an environment of respect, acceptance, and inclusion and to support ethnic, racial, religious, ability, and socio-economic diversity among all the organization’s constituencies. The organization affirms and values:

  • Belief in the dignity and humanity of every person and a commitment to understanding individual and group differences.
  • Generosity of spirit, thinking beyond one’s immediate self-interest and sharing talents freely with others.
  • Fostering diverse viewpoints.
  • Openness to new ideas and rejection of stereotypical thinking.
  • Honesty, kindness, integrity, courage, humor, and empathy.

FBH is committed to recognizing the importance of communication and encouraging dialogue among all constituencies; and to recognizing and responding to individual and institutional prejudices, both overt and subtle, based on gender, race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, and physical and mental ability.

Friends of the Blue Hills is:

  • Working internally and externally to consciously create an environment of respect and inclusion through diversity efforts
  • Striving for ethnic, racial, religious, ability, and socio-economic diversity among all the constituencies of the organization
  • Striving to increase awareness, build mutually rewarding relationships and foster collaboration with a broad range of business, community, and political leaders and other individuals from diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences
  • Offering a variety of programs to include the wider community

Aware of the complexity of diversity issues, FBH acknowledges a continuing need to evaluate and revise its diversity efforts. This process is critical to remaining relevant and developing sustainable solutions to our most pressing problems facing the Blue Hills Reservation. We remain committed to the principles of diversity described here.
